what else do you need?

If you have a 3 axis CNC machine to convert to a 3D printer you will need the following additional items;

  • Gnexlab Temperature Controller
    You can get lots of information at this web site.
  • One Axis Motor Driver

    If you have a 3D CNC system probably you have 3 motor drivers. For the filament drive mechanism you will need one more axis (4th axis) so one more motor driver. If you are using Gecko drive 540 you may have an unused 4th motor output which you can conveniently use.

  • Temperature Sensors
    To connect to your gnexlab controller card in order to measure the temperature you will need temperature sensors. You can use two types of sensors. Thermocouple and Thermistor.
    100k Thermistor ability to measure up to 300 degrees C
    K-type Thermocouple
  • Heated Build Platform
    The build platform is the surface that we use for printing on and It must be heated to a temperature around 110 degrees C for ABS and 50 degrees C for PLA.
  • Extruder
    This part will extrude the hot plastic.

  2. OK thanks. I have 3x Stepper motor drivers 2m542 ( 4.2A ). Should I use another the same to power the flament drive mechanism ?
    I am guessing I can use any flament drive mechanism ?

    I was wondering if you have estimated time to have new stock of the new thermistor controller.

    I have a question. My machine works with LinuxCNC. I have see some webs where the people use skeinforge and slic3r and then open the archive in linuxcnc.

    It uses the extruder as A axis of linux cnc (i see this page http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=604&mobile=on with the config).

    Is there any posibility to use linux cnc? if not i will get your match3 add-on.

  4. Sorry, it was incomplete. I refer to control the extruder and bed temperature with your controller and controll the extruder stepper motor with A axis in Linux CNC with the other axis… What do you think?

    • Yes This is possible. You can use LinuxCNC in order to move the stepper motors. My board will do the PID temperature issues standalone. Most of the slicing software can generate gcode of sliced 3d model with A axis movement for the extruder motor.
